Jermain Defoe puts Hammers on red alert ahead of winter window

In much the same way as the stars of a Hollywood movie may conveniently fall for each other weeks before the release of their film, Jermain Defoe has expressed his love for West Ham United as the January transfer window comes into focus.
Fortunately for the Tottenham striker that love may be returned by the Hammers despite the ill will directed toward the player following the end of his first stint at the club.
Defoe handed in a transfer request at Upton Park immediately after the club’s relegation from the Premier League in 2002-03 and has seemingly never been forgiven by fans of the east London-based outfit.
However, with six blanks from 10 Premier League games this season, West Ham are hardly in a position to hold grudges if a proven goalscorer of Defoe’s ilk becomes available.
And after being forced down the White Hart Lane pecking order by the arrivals of Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, Defoe has moved to appease Hammers fans in an apparent bid to secure a return.
“It was a massive mistake. I didn’t really want to do it,” the 31-year-old told ITV4’s Sport life Stories.
“We’re talking about leaving the club I was in love with at the time because I came through the youth system with my friends, the fans loved me there. They were brilliant – every game they sang my name.”
Despite being limited to just 163 minutes of Premier League football this season, Defoe has demonstrated his ability to still compete at the top level by bagging eight goals from his 13 appearances in all competitions, including six in the Europa League.
The player’s desire for first team football – with a ticket to Brazil the ultimate aim – more than matches West Ham’s need for fresh options up front so expect the Hammers – who are currently 6/1 for relegation – to roll out the red carpet to land their man in January.
