Everton lead the chase for Spartak Moscow winger McGeady

Everton look set to bolster their chances of making the Premier League’s top four with a January bid for Spartak Moscow winger Aiden McGeady.

The Republic of Ireland international is out of contract in the summer and with Spartak facing the prospect of losing him on a free transfer Roberto Martinez is prepared to test the water with a bid for the player’s services.

The 27-year-old has been offered a new deal to stay in Moscow but has so far rejected the chance to extend his three-year stay in the Russian capital.

The Irishman has made it clear he is keen on a return to Britain and Spartachi will be desperate to recoup some of the £9.5 million they paid Celtic for the forward in 2010.

Everton look best placed to bring McGeady, who has won 63 caps for Ireland scoring three goals, back to the UK, as they look to build on an impressive start to the season.

However, three successive draws have seen Everton slip down into seventh spot but resilient performances in picking up points against Tottenham and Liverpool will have cheered the Goodison Park faithful.

The Spartak star’s possible arrival on Merseyside could boost Martinez’s side’s charge to reach the Champions League even further, with the Blues 12/1 with Ladbrokes to finish in the top four.

The Toffees, who are willing to pay up to £6 million for the former Celtic man’s services, are also 2/1 to finish in the Premier League’s top six.

With Everton already cementing their position in the top half of the table, McGeady’s signature could be the catalyst for an Everton assault on the European places.
