Bresnan set for England recall after four-wicket haul
Published:Tim Bresnan staked his claim for a place in England’s line-up for the second Test against Australia by putting in a solid showing for the tourist’s Performance Programme against a Queensland 2nd XI.
The 28-year-old, who is recovering from a stress fracture of the back, followed an unbeaten half-century with the bat on Wednesday by taking four wickets on the second day to bowl the hosts out for 156.
England coach Ashley Giles believes the Yorkshire paceman’s return from injury will be a welcome boost for Alastair Cook’s side after their 381-run first Test defeat.
“Bresnan will return to the Test squad after the [Brisbane] game,” Giles said.
“To have someone like him available would be a big bonus for England.”
England’s tour continues with a fixture against the Chairman’s XI in Alice Springs with Steven Finn and Boyd Rankin expected to play as they look to force their way into the Test side.
Chris Tremlett is the man in possession of the third seamer spot but after his lacklustre performance at the Gabba, posting match figures of 4-120, England could be forced into a re-think ahead of the second Test of five.
And Bresnan’s performance with both bat and ball for the second-string in Brisbane could be enough to convince Cook and Andy Flower that he is fully fit and ready to take on the Aussies at the Adelaide Oval.
The all-rounder, who has 67 wickets from his 21 Tests, is 7/2 with Ladbrokes to make an instant impact against Michael Clarke’s side by being the top England wicket taker in the 1st innings.
The Yorkshireman, who averages around 30 in the five-day format, would also strengthen the tourists’ batting line-up and if the top-order fails again Bresnan, at odds of 33/1, is an outside bet to top score for England in the first innings of the Adelaide match.
