Bad news for Barkley as England team to face Germany revealed

Published:

A second start for Adam Lallana and the return of Daniel Sturridge to lead the line will be the main talking points ahead of the unveiling of England’s team to face Germany, but on the flip side, the prospects don’t look good for Ross Barkley.

Lallana has shortened into 3/1 to make the England plane to Brazil and he clearly did enough to impress Hodgson in the 2-0 defeat to Chile, bearing in mind only he and Wayne Rooney have kept their places.

It is the central midfield positions where arguably squad places are most up for grabs ahead of the World Cup, with Barkley and Jordan Henderson among those most looking to make an impact in the two friendlies.

However, their World Cup prospects must be on the dim side, bearing in mind that neither have managed to secure a start between them, watching squad utility man James Milner take to the pitch at their expense against Chile.

Assuming that Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Jack Wilshere are pretty much bankers to make England’s final 23-man squad, there is arguably only room for one more player in central midfield.

Tom Cleverley has been given the nod to start alongside Gerrard against Germany and this must give him a clear edge to take this spot.

Cleverley is 4/5 to make the final England squad and a promising performance at Wembley would make him hard to leave out.

England are 19/10 to beat Germany, with the full starting line-up below.
