Back Mourinho to lead Chelsea to his third Premier League crown

Published:

Chelsea have suffered their worst start to a season in six years and Jose Mourinho his worst since taking over at Porto, having already lost three times this season. Yet the Blues remain very much in the title race as their challengers remain congested at the top of the table and are priced at an enticing 3/1.

Arsenal and Manchester City currently lead the way at 11/4, but there are still question marks over their title credentials. For Arsenal, there are doubts over their squad depth and suspicions that injuries to key players in defence and attack could seriously derail their challenge.

The Gunners have also failed to win any silverware in nine years and lack Chelsea’s winning experience.

Chelsea do not play a title contender again until they meet Arsenal on December 23rd. Mourinho’s teams have always been noted for their consistency and this run gives them an opportunity to close the gap at the top.

With 16 out of a possible 18 points at home, Chelsea’s problem has been their away form. But their next three away fixtures at West Ham, Sunderland and Stoke all look distinctly winnable.

These sides have just one home win each to their names all season and Chelsea have home games at Southampton and Crystal Palace in between. The Blues could conceivably record five straight wins on the trot, making the 3/1 price look good value.

Liverpool, who have overtaken Chelsea, still remain a tempting outside bet at 8/1. Yet they were outclassed in their 2-0 loss to Arsenal and there are reservations about their ability to maintain a consistent challenge throughout the season.
