Back Ashton to chime with Big Ben back in tow

Northampton full-back Ben Foden’s inclusion in England’s line-up for their Autumn International clash with Argentina can inspire Chris Ashton to rediscover his scoring touch for Stuart Lancaster’s side.

Foden, drafted into the Red Rose side as an emergency winger in the place of injured speedsters Christian Wade and Marlon Yarde, has enjoyed an excellent partnership with former Saints team-mate Ashton in the past, with the pair scoring 21 tries in the 26 Tests they have played together.

In recent times, without Foden alongside him, Ashton has struggled in the white of England and the Saracens star can count himself very lucky at retaining his place in the starting XV for the meeting with the Pumas.

But Foden believes he can spark the winger back into the scoring form he broke onto the world stage with.

“Ashy’s not had the greatest time in an England shirt, so hopefully I’ll be the confidence he needs,” said Foden.

“We have an understanding of one another, what each other is about. Hopefully you’ll see us bouncing off each other and causing their defence some problems.”

The last time Foden wore an England jersey was 18 months ago and in that time Ashton has notched only two international tries.

But with his old partner in crime back in the line-up Ashton, who has scored 17 tries in 35 England appearances, can rediscover the form that saw him classed as one of the deadliest finishers in the game, scoring twice against the Aussies at HQ in 2010 and four times in a Six Nations match against Italy in 2011.

Ashton is 8/1 with Ladbrokes to rediscover his scoring touch and cross the tryline first in the match, while Foden is 9/1 to score first on his return to the side and cap a dream return to the international stage.
