AC/DC set to rage against the X Factor machine this Christmas
Published:Veteran rockers AC/DC have emerged as the new favourites to land the coveted Christmas number one spot, following the launch of a Facebook campaign to back the group.
The Australian band are available at odds of 5/2 with Ladbrokes to reach the UK singles summit, ahead of Susan Boyle’s charity effort with Elvis and X Factor favourite Sam Bailey, who are both priced at 4/1 to be top of the charts come December 25th.
This latest market move comes after the launch of an online crusade encouraging the public to purchase copies of AC/DC’s iconic 1979 hit, “Highway to Hell”, in a bid to derail Simon Cowell’s continued domination of the Christmas charts.
The Aussie rockers are certainly in with shout, with 2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry previously missing out on the number one spot after a social media campaign saw Rage Against the Machine pip him at the post with their the expletive-filled single “Killing in the Name”.
Despite selling over 70 million albums worldwide, AC/DC have never had a top ten single in the UK though, with their biggest hit to date being 1982’s Heatseeker, which reached no.12.
But they will take some solace from the example set by Rage, who had previously seen “Killing” reach the lowly no.25 spot back in 1992, before the Facebook campaign propelled it to the top of the Christmas singles standings some 17 years later.
And the good news for fans of the Antipodean rockers and those behind the continued anti-X Factor movement is that the early signs are good, with the movement’s Facebook page already attracting over 100,000 likes in less than four days.
With odds of Lily Allen claiming the festive number one spot now drifting to 6/1, while another X Factor hopeful Tamara Foster is at 8/1, it could actually be a slightly less hellish holiday for fans of proper music this Christmas.
