Wigan v Maribor: DW set for close encounter

Published:

Wigan are unbeaten in four at home, and will be confident of securing a result against an out-of-form Maribor side.

Owen Coyle’s men are 3/5 to take all three points, while the draw is a tempting 11/4 option. Maribor are 9/2 to win their first match on English soil at the fifth attempt.

While currently sitting at the summit of the Slovenian league, The Violets have struggled of late, losing three and drawing one of their last four matches. They began their season going 10 games unbeaten, but opened their Europa League campaign with a 5-2 home defeat to Rubin Kazan, and in their subsequent three fixtures have scored just twice.

While the Slovenian league champions have been a regular presence in European competition over the last few years, they have proven largely unsuccessful competitors.

In the last three seasons they have lost 11 of 15 matches in the Europa League, and last won away in the competition against Hibernian in 2010, with their eight away fixtures since that victory yielding just three goals for the PrvaLiga champions.

The well-travelled visitors have registered over one goal just once in their last nine matches, and look a safe bet at 2/11 to register either 0 or 1 goal here.

While the hosts haven’t been in great offensive shape themselves lately – having failed to net in four of their last five – they are a different proposition at the DW Stadium.

The Latics are unbeaten in four on home soil, winning their last two, and in each of those fixtures – all in the Championship – they found the net twice.

A Wigan win and under 2.5 goals scored certainly tempts at 13/5, though the visitors will believe they are more than capable of taking a draw away from the North West. A stalemate with the same paucity of goals can be taken at 10/3 – under 2.5 goals in the game at 5/6 will entice many.

Given the recent woes of both attacks, a negative selection on the Both Teams to Score market at 3/4 should also interest many, especially given the absence of Grant Holt and leading scorer Shaun Maloney for the home side.
