Three unknowns to follow Berahino into Premier League limelight

Few others than West Brom supporters or die-hard Football Manager gamers would have known the name Saido Berahino before a ball was kicked this season, but many more will be familiar with him now.

Not only did he score West Brom’s winner at Old Trafford, but Berahino has found the net five times in six appearances for the Baggies this season, making him one of the finds of the season, even if he did come through the club’s youth ranks.

Serge Gnabry is another who would not have been especially well known at the start of the campaign, but has started three straight games after injuries to the likes of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and grabbed the opener at Swansea.

It would be no surprise if a few more currently unknown gems made a breakthrough in the top-flight this season and here are three names below who may be ready to make an impact.

Paul Dummett (Newcastle)

Young breakthroughs at Newcastle have not been particularly common at Newcastle in the last decade, with Andy Carroll and Steven Taylor the only pair to really emerge.

Dummett has already made a positive impact at left-back against Leeds in the Capital One Cup and has unsurprisingly been compared to Gareth Bale, largely because he is a Wales under-21 international.

Moving Davide Santon to right-back could accomodate Dummett and much will hinge on whether he can remain in front of Massadio Haidara when the Frenchman returns from injury.

Joe Dudgeon (Hull)

Having missed virtually the whole of last season, Dudgeon may take a while to reproduce his best, but has shown signs in the Capital One Cup that he is on the right path.

Hull have kept cleans in both fixtures that Dudgeon has participated in and key to the progress of the former Manchester United youngster will be the ability to stay fit.

Declan John (Cardiff)

A third left-back to make the list and one Welsh club have already benefited from putting their faith in youth, when Swansea threw Ben Davies in at the deep end last season after Neil Taylor got injured.

Malky Mackay has previously indicated that John is a player with huge potential and he has already benefited from a Premier League debut, when starting on the opening day against West Ham.
