Saracens a good bet to end English Heineken Cup misery

Saracens tight 19-12 Aviva Premiership victory over Wasps once again showed why the London side should be taken seriously as Heineken Cup contenders.

Mark McCall’s men owed much of their success to the boot of Owen Farrell who converted three late penalties but the result puts them six points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

It is also a hugely encouraging result heading into this Friday’s Heineken Cup game against Connacht as they aim to become the first English side to win the competition since Wasps in 2007.

The Englishmen will be big favourites against the 1000/1 Heineken Cup outsiders but they will want to do more than simply win against the Irish side – they will be looking to put down a big marker with far tougher tests against Toulouse awaiting them in pool three.

With the likes of 20-year-old No.8  continuing to show impressive form and more experienced heads like Steve Borthwick amongst their ranks, the Saracens have all the ingredients needed to mount a serious assault on European rugby’s biggest prize.

They are currently the 7/1 third favourites behind Toulon (4/1) and Clermont (9/2) but, if they continue their impressive start to the season and see off Connacht and Toulouse – who are 8/1 to win the Heineken Cup – then having a punt on the London side could prove a wise long-term investment.
