Rodgers must be wary of omitting Agger for too long at Liverpool

In light of his struggles to break back into Liverpool’s starting line-up after a brief injury layoff, comments by centre-back Daniel Agger are sure to rekindle interest from around the continent when the January transfer window opens.

There are mixed messages coming out of Anfield, with some news sources quoting a frustrated Agger, who was reportedly responding to his lack of playing time in recent games, though the player himself has used his twitter account to deny he could soon leave Liverpool.

Reports have Agger saying: “If I don’t play. If the manager doesn’t think I’m good enough, that could make me leave Liverpool.

“I’m here to play football, nothing else. So if I don’t play football, then I don’t want to be here.”

However, the player has since responded through social media by saying: “Please stop all the tweets about me leaving! I’m not going anywhere! Will be back in the team soon:) Y.N.W.A”

Since picking up a rather innocuous injury in the build up to Liverpool’s Premier League game away at Swansea (which he subsequently missed), the Danish defender was substituted at home to Southampton and has been left out of the starting XI for the last four league games.

Despite Brendan Rodgers implementing a system which accommodates three central defenders, Agger has remained an unused sub in three of those four games, which has clearly prompted a reaction.

Having been first-choice at the start of the campaign, it’s certainly a tough break for Agger, even though Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel have all performed admirably as a threesome.

In fact, Liverpool are now in third place after thumping West Brom 4-1, seeing their odds reduced to 8/1 for the title and 6/5 for the top four.

Nevertheless, Rodgers will do well to start to intergrate his vice-captain back into the starting XI sooner rather than later, as the like of Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester City have all been linked previously.

Agger is arguably the most technically gifted of all the defenders at the club and would be snapped up by another top side.
