Real Madrid to derail Liverpool title charge with Suarez bid

Published:

Luis Suarez confirmed he was back to his best after turning in a stunning display to fire Liverpool to a 3-1 win at Sunderland on his return to Premier League action.

His partnership with Daniel Sturridge looks capable of pushing Liverpool into contention for the Premier League title, for which they are currently priced at 8/1.

However, after fighting off Arsenal’s advances for Suarez over the summer, Liverpool could face another battle to keep the Uruguayan in January, as Real Madrid are reportedly ready to offer £45m for his services.

Suarez himself made it clear he would be happy to leave Anfield over the summer, and Liverpool might be more amenable to a move that does not strengthen a Premier League rival.

The Spanish side, despite splashing out around £150m in the summer, have left themselves short of options upfront, where Karim Benzema is their only senior striker.

Talented youngsters Alvaro Morata and Jese Rodriguez can also play in the centre-forward role, as indeed can Cristiano Ronaldo, but Benzema has been heavily relied upon by Carlo Ancelotti so far.

The Frenchman has started every match this season, but his only goals in the past seven matches both came in the 6-1 demolition of Galatasaray.

Benzema scored 20 goals in 50 games for Madrid last season, while Suarez netted 30 in just 44 matches for Liverpool.

Adding Suarez to their attack would undoubtedly boost Madrid’s chances of winning trophies this season, with Ancelotti’s main remit to bring in a 10th European Cup.

Los Merengues are currently 9/2 to win the Champions League.

Should Liverpool be in contention for the title or a top-four place come January they will be highly resistant to the idea of selling Suarez.
But as Tottenham Hotspur found out over the summer, it can be very hard to say no to Madrid.
