NFL Treble: Unbeaten Saints to beat Patriots in New England
Published:After the Bears defeated the Giants at Soldier Field on Thursday, Week 6 of the NFL Regular Season gets well and truly underway on Sunday. Our treble predicts home defeats for the Patriots and Buccaneers, with a win on the spread for the Broncos – paying out at just over 5.8/1.
Saints @ Patriots – Saints: 11/10
The New Orleans Saints are unbeaten in their five games this season, and are looking to become the first team to deny the New England Patriots (4-1) victory on their own turf. The omens look good.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees is 3-0 against his opposite man Tom Brady, who comes into this game having had his streak of 52 regular-season games with a touchdown pass ended last week in Cincinnati.
The Patriots lead the league in scoring and in yards per game last season, but have struggled in 2013, scoring just 19.0 points per game thus far (24th); their much-revered quarterback’s 56.6 completion percentage is his lowest ever.
The Saints are firing on all cylinders however, and possess the best Net Points differential in the NFC, and have six more touchdowns (14) than their hosts here.
Jaguars (+26.5) @ Broncos (-26.5) – Broncos: 10/11
The Denver Broncos (5-0) have been utterly indomitable to date, led by the evergreen Peyton Manning, who has completed 75.9 per cent of his passes with 12 touchdowns in his last five starts against the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-5).
The Broncos lead the NFL in points differential (+91), and are averaging a quite breathtaking 46 points per game; they won their last match at Mile High with the Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) by a 32-point margin.
The Jags could be forgiven for having their tails firmly between their legs already; their 31st-ranked defence will hold few concerns for the rampant Broncos, who will surely expect to go 4-2 against the spread here, especially given that their guests are 1-6 against the spread in their last seven.
Eagles @ Buccaneers – Eagles: 5/7
The Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) are 2-1 on the road this season, and have beaten the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4) in their last two clashes, the most recent being last season at the Raymond James Stadium.
Quarterback Michael Vick is an injury doubt for the visitors, but one could argue that the Eagles’ chance of victory may be improved by his absence given the way backup Nick Foles played last week. The 24-year-old completed 16 of 25 attempts for 197 yards and two touchdowns in the 21-36 road win against the Giants.
The Buccaneers have struggled to get going offensively this season, managing a paltry 11.0 points per game (31st in NFL), while the Eagles are notably better at 27.0. The Bucs’ rookie quarterback Mike Glennon struggled on his first start last week, conceding two fourth-quarter interceptions and completing an uninspiring 24 of 43 passes.
