Newcastle v Man City: Back an away win with over 2.5 total goals

Published:

Nine games have sailed by since Newcastle even so much as managed a draw against Manchester City and with Manuel Pellegrini able to call upon a far superior second string in the Capital One Cup, it looks like more punishment awaits Toon fans.

The Geordie faithful would be forgiven if they didn’t turn up in their usual droves for this fourth round League Cup tie, such is Newcastle’s abysmal recent record against Man City.

Their 4-0 opening-day drubbing in the Premier League at the Etihad was simply a continuation of the way this match-up has gone over the last five seasons; namely City winning and scoring at least twice, which has happened in the last 11 encounters in all competitions.

And in seven of the last eight meetings, combining the City victory with over 2.5 total goals in the match would have landed, so punters should certainly take a slice of the 13/10 that these two elements fuse together again in the cup.

Running with this theory naturally brings into play several other markets worthy of exploitation.

The visitors to score 2/3 goals at odds-against of 21/20 looks a fine prospect on its own, while City grabbing 4+ goals – as they have done in their last two games against Newcastle – at 19/4 is also a tempting little number.

Meanwhile, a pattern has emerged of both teams scoring in the last six of Man City’s games in all competitions and the last four for Alan Pardew’s side, so combining the away win with both teams scoring at 21/10 is another appealing option.

While it’s difficult to second guess the starting line-up of either side, David Silva has scored in the last two games between the clubs and the Spaniard’s a decent-looking 3/1 to notch anytime at St James’ Park.
