Newcastle v Liverpool: High-scoring draw is on the cards

Published:

Newcastle entertain Liverpool in a fixture which will carry a certain amount of trepidation for Toon fans after a 6-0 hiding from the visitors last season.

Liverpool may have started the season in impressive fashion, though the odds of them doling out another 6-0 hiding are rightfully lengthy at 175/1.

However, as we have already touched upon on this site, historically this is a matchup which has rained goals, with 10 of the last 14 surpassing the 2.5 goals mark – making the 4/5 on it happening again a real tempter.

But, who can walk away with the points this time? The fact that this fixture has not produced a single draw at St James’ Park in the last eight Premier League meetings, might suggest that one is long overdue.

The draw can be backed at 5/2 with Ladbrokes and considering both sides have only shared the spoils once each in the league before this also, perhaps the overdue theory can work its magic again.

Newcastle’s form has been suitably unpredictable, winning at Aston Villa and Cardiff, but also managing to lose at home to Hull.

Meanwhile, Liverpool may have appeared to cruise to successive victories, but both of those arrived at against the bottom two sides in the top-flight after Southampton had already exposed them at Anfield.

What is worth noting is that Newcastle have been breached seven times in their last three league games, while Liverpool also conceded against the both Crystal Palace and Sunderland.

So going on the high probability of both teams scoring at 4/6 in combination with the goal-carzy nature of this fixture, why not consider cracking odds of 14/1 on the 2-2 or the weekend-making 40/1 on a 3-3 classic at St James’.
