Montjeu record in Racing Post Trophy ticks box for Century

Montjeu is one of the leading sires in the horse racing game, with his descendants securing four Epsom Derby successes since 2005, alongside two of the last three instalments of the Ladbrokes St Leger (bonus points for naming these six horses).

It is the stamina provided by the Montjeu pedigree that is in such high demand and this is one reason why his foals have such a strong record in the Racing Post Trophy.

The final Group 1 contest of the Flat season is contested over 1m, the longest race in the calendar for two-year-olds, and so stamina is of utmost importance.

It may not mean too much that only two of the last four winners of the Racing Post Trophy have been sired by Montjeu, but this fact does become more prominent when it is considered that in the other two years he didn’t sire an entrant.

Therefore, is there another horse that can add to the Group 1 successes of St Nicholas Abbey and Camelot this year? Well, of the 13 entrants, only one is a progeny of Montjeu and that horse is Century.

Century is 3/1 to win the Racing Post Trophy and was successful on his sole racecourse appearance to date, landing a lesser contest over 1m at the Curragh.

Not only did there seem to be a bit more in the tank that day, but the runner-up from the yard of John Oxx, Marakoush, also has the makings of a smart performer and so this win could be especially pivotal.

Meanwhile, the same Curragh contest was won by Magician in 2012 and he has since progressed to a Group 1 horse.

Finally, Aidan O’Brien has been responsible for three of the last four winners of the Racing Post Trophy and although he currently has four entries in this year’s renewal, the betting suggests that Century is his best hope at Doncaster.
