King of Stats: All the numbers ahead of British Champions Day
Published:With £3.4m in prize money on offer across the card, the British Champions Day meeting is the richest in British racing and because of this, arguably brings many of the season’s superstars to Ascot for their final combats of the campaign.
Five showpieces make up the card and the King Of Stats has mulled over each to provide the nuggets of information that can help turn a profit.
1887 – Cirrus Des Aigles is 10/11 to win the Champion Stakes, but it has been 126 years since there was a seven-year-old winner of the race. Another Champions Day favourite up against it from an age perspective is Maarek. Maarek is a six-year-old that is 9/4 to win the Champion Sprint, but only one horse older than four has triumphed since 1950 and this was in 1978.
6 – Jack Dexter is unbeaten on all six of his career starts where the ground has been declared as being soft or heavy. The going is expected to be soft for Champions Day and he is 4/1 to win the Champions Sprint.
0 – The number of Champion Stakes winners that famed trainers Aidan O’Brien and Saeed Bin Suroor can celebrate between them. This is bad news for the chances of Farhh (7/2) and Ruler Of The World (7/1).
10 – There has been no bigger-priced winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in the last decade than Ramonti, who triumphed at 5/1 in 2007. All of the winners in this period also came from the first three in the betting. It will be a four-horse race this year in that case between Dawn Approach (2/1), Maxios (4/1), Soft Falling Rain (9/2) and Olympic Glory (9/2).
2 – Dawn Approach is the only previous Ascot winner in the field for the QEII Stakes, triumphing on both starts at the course. Four of the last five three-year-old winners had also run in the 2000 Guineas in the same season, which Dawn Approach won. This may make him the best bet of the above-mentioned quartet.
129 – Timeform have released their weight-adjusted ratings for Champions Day and it is Hot Snap that is ranked highest for the Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes. This year’s Nell Gwyn winner is rated 129, which is two points higher than Epsom Oaks victor Talent. Hot Snap is 6/1 to triumph.
119 – This is the highest Racing Post Rating of a winner of the Champions Long Distance Cup in the last eight years. Only two entrants are rated 117 or lower this year – Pale Mimosa and Eye Of The Storm. The latter won over this trip at the first attempt last time and is 8/1.
