If Liverpool are to sign Menez from PSG, he has to start out wide
Published:Looking unprofessional is nothing new to Jeremy Menez.
Storming off down the tunnel, before the end of PSG’s Champions League win over Benfica, reportedly because it was clear he would remain an unused substitute has resulted in Laurent Blanc omitting him from the squad entirely for the club’s next Ligue 1 game with Marseille.
This follows a similar saga under Carlo Ancelotti last season when Menez adjudged he was being used wrongly, when getting only 15 minutes at the end of a Champions League showdown with Valencia.
Given that Menez is out of contract in the summer, the possibility of his departing in January is enhanced and Liverpool are said to be one club linked with him.
Whether Brendan Rodgers needs such a player affected by ego issues in his squad is debateable, particularly one that can be equally as frustrating on the pitch in terms of inconsistent performances.
However, when Menez is on song, he could be an asset to almost any club and he may prove a decent option if Victor Moses returns to Chelsea when his Liverpool loan deal expires.
Like Moses, Menez is especially direct with his attacking and could be utilised as the central attacking midfield threat in a 3-5-2 formation.
He has stated before that he prefers to play centrally, rather than in a wider position, but he is not a regular scorer of goals or ultimately consistent enough to hold down this type of role.
But playing Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Menez behind Daniel Sturridge could work and this trio are all largely interchangeable.
If Liverpool remain in the running in January to finish in the top four this season, Menez may be able to bring the speed, creativity and touch of the unknown to help them across the line.
