Gus Poyet is big favourite to be next Sunderland manager

Gus Poyet looks set to return to football management with Sunderland according to the latest odds from Ladbrokes.

Poyet – who left Brighton under a cloud in the summer – is currently priced at 5/4 to become the next permanent manager at the Premier League strugglers.

Current interim manager Kevin Ball may have got Sunderland playing as if they actually care but, despite their upturn in form, they have still yet to get a win in the league this season, and that lack of points of the board is why he is out at a pretty hefty 5/1 to become permanent boss.

Meanwhile, Tony Pulis has also joined the frontrunners, with the ex-Stoke boss being backed in to 11/4 to get back in the managerial hot seat sooner rather than later.

He may not be the purists’ choice but, with Sunderland anchored to the foot of the Premier League table, getting the man who made Stoke a stable top tier side may not be the worst thing for the Black Cats.

Even more intriguingly is the 16/1 quoted for former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen.

The Dutchman remains a sought after figure in football, with Martin Jol also keen to take Sir Alex Ferguson’s former right hand man to help Fulham climb the table.

Whether Sunderland will be prepared to take a risk on a man who hasn’t exactly lit up the managerial world following spells in charge of Brondby and Anzhi Makhachkala is another matter though.

Finally, Alan Curbishley is currently trading at 66/1 because, well, Alan Curbishley always trades at 66/1 whenever a managerial position becomes available.
