Germany v Rep Ireland: Rampant hosts to take advantage

The last time these sides met, Germany embarrassed the Irish by putting six past them in Dublin. Now the Republic arrive downbeat after successive defeats and vulnerable to another heavy loss.

With Ireland’s chances of qualification now looking more remote than a llama farm in the Andes, a trip to Group C’s unbeaten leaders Germany seems likely to settle the issue once and for all.

Narrow losses to their main group rivals Austria and Sweden cost Giovanni Trapattoni his job and now interim manager Noel King has the unenviable task of a trip to Cologne to face a Germany side that’ve dropped just two points in their eight games so far.

Given Germany saw off Austria 3-0 in their last home qualifier last month, it’s difficult to pick out any other result than a German victory here at 1/6, though punters would be forgiven for not rolling over with excitement.

Instead, profit may well be found in backing further torment for the boys in green against Joachim Low’s rampant side, who’ve plundered their way to the summit of Group C with 28 goals – three more than any other nation in the European section of qualification.

After embarrassment in Dublin there is every chance King will be forced into fielding a defensively minded team, though backing Germany to score 2/3 goals at odds of 21/20 looks a worthy punt.

This bet would have landed in every one of Germany’s previous eight qualifiers, while only Austria on their own soil have prevented them from scoring more than twice.

With so much attacking talent available, such as the likes of Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller, this Germany side cause havoc with their interchangeability and 31/20 says they can bag over 3.5 goals in Cologne.
