Fergie and Fletcher can boost United’s title hopes

Manchester United’s dwindling title hopes have been given a double boost following the return to action of Darren Fletcher and a vote of confidence from Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Red Devils have bounced back from their worst start to a domestic campaign in 24 years to win two of their last three games and the spirit that David Moyes’ men showed in coming from behind twice to beat Stoke at Old Trafford is a cause for cautious optimism for the United faithful.
Victory against the Potters saw United move on to 14 points – eight points behind leaders Arsenal – and Sir Alex believes that his former charges are the only group of players in the league that have the mettle to turn things around and hold on to their crown.
“We had bad starts to the season many times. [But] we are the only club in that league that can come from behind to win the league because of our history,” the 71-year-old commented.
The poor start to David Moyes’ reign at the club means United are now as long as 8/1 to claim the title – with Chelsea (9/5), Manchester City (12/5) and Arsenal (4/1) all shorter prices – but with the team winning games without playing well there are still reasons to believe the champions can mount a title challenge.
Such hope has been further boosted by the news that midfielder Darren Fletcher is nearing a return to competitive action.
The Scot has only featured in 13 games since being diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel condition in December 2011 but played for over an hour in a recent under-21 match against Fulham.
With United lacking in the middle of the park after missing out on a number of top transfer targets the experience and competition for places that Fletcher would bring to the table can only improve the Red Devils’ chances of success this term.
