Di Matteo would be chosen one of Palace fans to replace Holloway

Eight games into the new season and the Premier League has already witnessed its second managerial casualty, with Ian Holloway joining Paolo Di Canio in looking for a new club.

Holloway is not the first boss that has seemingly paid the penalty for punching above their weight by getting promoted to the top-flight, with Nigel Adkins looking hard done by when given his marching orders at Southampton last season.

However, few can argue that Mauricio Pochettino has not taken the club forward and Crystal Palace fans will now be hoping that Holloway’s successor does the same, with a 17th-placed finish in the Premier League this season the main goal.

The two names at the head of the betting to be the next Crystal Palace boss are Tony Pulis (3/1) and Neil Warnock (7/1).

Pulis has never previously been relegated, despite spells at Gillingham, Portsmouth and Stoke, where the clubs were widely expected to face the drop.

Warnock has achieved seven promotions in his career, including two since 2005 to the Premier League, and so he would be an interesting appointment, should the club already have one eye on the 2014/15 campaign.

Both men would look solid enough replacements and would fit the bill of a potential long-term appointment, to avoid another rebuilding job needing to be carried out in the summer.

But, another factor should be a manager that is of a calibre worthy enough to be welcomed by all supporters and able to get everyone singing from the same hymn sheet.

Roberto Di Matteo is arguably this person and 12/1 could prove a decent price that he is the next Crystal Palace manager.

The fact that he lives in London may increase the possibility of him accepting such a position, although the obvious issue with the Italian, is whether he has the attributes necessary to drag a team through a relegation dogfight.
