Chelsea on alert as Pogba future thrown into doubt

| 14.10.2013

David Moyes will certainly not thank his predecessor for the clumsy way Paul Pogba was allowed to leave Manchester United on a free transfer two years ago.

Since then the midfielder has established himself as one of the most promising young players in Europe, and exactly the kind of player United could have used.

Instead they could end up facing Pogba, with Chelsea no doubt interested in Juventus’ president Andrea Agnelli’s admission that Serie A is now seen as a transit destination for footballers, and that the 20-year-old could leave in a couple of years.

Chelsea are currently 23/10 to win the Premier League, but few would argue that they could use some extra power and verve in their central midfield.

John Obi Mikel looks no more impressive under Jose Mourinho than he has done under any of Chelsea’s myriad of other recent managers, and Frank Lampard is nearing the end of his illustrious career.

Pogba has all the attributes to be a long-term replacement for the England international in the heart of the Blues’ side.

Powerful, technically-adept and possessing an eye for a long-range stunner, Pogba has managed to force his way into a Juventus midfield stocked with superb players.

Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio join Pogba in rotating in and out of Antonio Conte’s side, giving the French youngster the best possible footballing education.

Boasting the best central midfield in Europe outside of Barcelona, Juventus are 4/6 favourites to win the Scudetto for the third time in a row.

If Chelsea can pick Pogba up in the next season or two, they could secure a major part of the future of their side, and Manchester United will be left rueing the fact they let him go all the more.
