Back out-of-their-depth Palace to finish rock bottom
Published:When the only win you have managed all season came against a team supervised by Paolo Di Canio you know the writing is on the wall – and Crystal Palace look like certainties to finish bottom of the Premier League.
Everybody beat Sunderland when Di Canio was in charge, but Ian Holloway’s men have showed precious little else to suggest they can compete at this level and instead of taking the 1/7 they make an immediate return to the Championship, the 7/10 Palace end up in 20th place has to be backed.
That win over the Black Cats is the only time the Eagles have avoided defeat in eight games all season, which includes a defeat at League One Bristol City in the Capital One Cup.
Just six goals have been scored in that sequence, and the bad form stretches back to last term, when the play-off winners won just one of their final 10 Championship matches and finished the season with the 15th best away record in the division.
They are a Championship squad in all but name and Ollie had a far more talented team at Blackpool yet still ended up being relegated – quite a feat in a division where Steve Kean’s Blackburn Rovers managed to stay up.
It is the Black Cats that currently occupy 20th position after picking up just one point from seven games, and they are 10/3 to stay there. But with Di Canio having fallen on his sword, improvement under new boss Gus Poyet is certain and the return of Steven Fletcher guarantees goals.
Palace’s fellow promotion winners Hull City and Cardiff City are 11/1 and 12/1 respectively to finish bottom of the pile, but both have proved themselves to be far superior to the Selhurst Park outfit, who look like one of the weakest teams in Premier League history.
