A Tottenham win to nil holds real appeal as they visit Aston Villa

Published:

This televised Sunday clash sees a repeat of Tottenham’s September visit to Villa Park in the Capital One Cup in which they triumphed 4-0, and the stats don’t look good for the hosts again here in the Premier League.

Whichever way you look at it, the recent history of this fixture makes poor reading for those of a claret and blue persuasion.

Tottenham are not only unbeaten in their last nine league games against Aston Villa, winning six of those, but the 4-0 hiding they doled out in the League Cup last month represented the fourth time in five meetings where the Londoners won to nil.

In fact, two of their three league trips away from White Hart Lane this season have resulted in 1-0 wins for the Londoners too, with the north London derby providing the only away-day blip so far.

Therefore, punters looking to jazz up their Sunday afternoon viewing may well wish to consider this eventuality occurring again, with Spurs’ price set at 5/2 to win without conceding, while the more cautious could simply plump for the 1/1 on a Tottenham win.

Of course, we have to consider current form too. However, that 3-0 humbling by West Ham should only serve to act as a catalyst for a huge reaction from Andre Villas-Boas’ visiting side.

Furthermore, many members of the current Lilywhites squad can draw on the happy memories of successive 4-0 victories on their last two visits to the second city, especially with the last one still as fresh as a daisy in their minds.

Victory in a crazy game over Manchester City will have restored some belief that Villa Park can prove a valuable source of points again for the hosts, though their inability to keep clean sheets is a constant source of worry to the faithful.

It’s now 14 Premier League home games for Villa since they kept a clean sheet, and considering Tottenham have scored at least twice in six of the last seven encounters with Villa, so 27/20 on them bagging 2-3 again looks worth taking.
