Who will Barzalona, O’Brien and Buick choose in St Leger betting?

The problem when trainers have two horses entered into a particular race is that the stable jockey can have a major dilemma over which one to choose.

Jim Crowley has already made the wrong choice in a Classic this season when opting to ride Secret Gesture in the Epsom Oaks, rather than Ralph Beckett’s other runner Talent.

Meanwhile, in the Epsom Derby, Joseph O’Brien chose Battle Of Marengo from the five entries of his father Aidan and it was Ryan Moore that ended up on board the winner Ruler Of The World.

Three jockeys appear to face this conundrum ahead of the St Leger, with O’Brien, John Gosden and Charlie Appleby all lining up with two runners.

Joseph O’Brien arguably has the toughest choice, as both of his possible mounts are fairly equal in the St Leger betting.

Given that he hasn’t ridden Foundry (5/1) in either of his racecourse starts to date, Leading Light (5/1) would look the obvious pick, especially as the pair have teamed up to secure victories on three successive starts.

Who then rides Foundry is a tough one, as Moore will be looking for another chance for the team after his Derby success, but it is Seamie Heffernan that has been on board Foundry on both occasions to date.

William Buick should have a pretty straight-forward choice from Gosden’s pair, with 10/3 co-favourite Excess Knowledge appearing to have better credentials than Feel Like Dancing (20/1).

Frankie Dettori picked up a spare ride for the stable when guiding Michelangelo to third in the St Leger last year and is an option, as is Richard Hughes, who is arguably the best jockey on offer without an obvious ride.

Mickael Barzalona guided Encke to St Leger victory 12 months ago and has the choice of Appleby duo Cap O’Rushes (20/1) or new Godolphin recruit Libertarian (8/1).

The latter looks the smarter move and the race could potentially pan out in the same manner as it did for Barzelona when he partnered Pour Moi to Epsom Derby success last season.

However, he did ride Cap O’Rushes to victory in the Gordon Stakes earlier this season when finishing ahead of fellow St Leger entrants Excess Knowledge and Secret Number.
