What Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh would say about the St Leger

Published:

St Leger’s Got Talent! A horse called Talent, that is, as this season’s Epsom Oaks winner was one of the final 14 left standing after the latest declaration stage ahead of the final Classic of the year.

With the audition rounds now over and the final coming up on Saturday, which of their favourite cliches might Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell say about the final runners and riders?

Cap O’Rushes (20/1)
Louis – “You owned the race” – referring to a victory in the Gordon Stakes in July.
Simon – “You may have just saved yourself with that run” – Talking about the same race after two previous fourth-place finishes.

Excess Knowledge (4/1)
Louis – “You are the one to beat in the competition” – Ante-post favourite and unlucky second last time in the Gordon Stakes.
Simon – “Welcome back into the competition” – After his Gordon Stakes run, which followed a reasonable third at Sandown.

Eye Of The Storm (16/1)
Louis – “I want everyone in Ireland to log onto their computers and bet on you” – Bets are unlikely to be forthcoming though as he is the third-string of trainer Aidan O’Brien.
Simon – “I won’t remember you in 15 minutes” – For the same reason as above.

Feel Like Dancing (16/1)
Louis – “You’ve got the likeability factor” – From the stable of John Gosden, who historically does well in the St Leger.
Simon – “I’m not going to patronise you, but …” – He is the stable second-string to Excess Knowledge.

Foundry (6/1)
Louis – “You’re what this race needs” – He is a young, inexperienced horse given a chance at the top level.
Simon – “You are a star. There is a gap in the market for a performer like you” – Second in the Great Voltigeur last time on only his second career start.

Galileo Rock (4/1)
Louis – “You remind me of a young Galileo” – He would do, it’s the son of multiple Group 1-winning horse Galileo!
Simon – “You are turning into my guilty pleasure” – Placed efforts last three runs at big odds.

Great Hall (20/1)
Louis – “You made that race your own” – Won on last start when in rear for most of the way.
Simon – “Well I’m going to say no” – Not good enough to win at Group 1 level.

Havana Beat (33/1)
Louis – “He’s a really fun horse” – Name sounds like an exciting nightclub.
Simon – “We have days and not decades to turn you into a St Leger winner” – Hasn’t been able to win at Class 3 level on last four starts, let alone Group class.

Leading Light (4/1)
Louis – “You’ve got the whole package” – Group winner, proven stamina, star trainer.
Simon – “I like you. It’s not just a yes, it’s a big fat yes” – Who wouldn’t with these attributes?

Libertarian (8/1)
Louis – “I think you could go far in this competition” – Second in the Epsom Derby was a fine run.
Simon – “I thought it was a bit of a pub racehorse performance” – Poor last time though in Irish Derby.

London Bridge (50/1)
Louis – “You are what this race is all about” – Little-known trainer Jo Hughes is bidding for a first big-race victory.
Simon – “You winning would be like a one-legged man winning the 100m sprint, the race would be a disaster” – He has been beaten on last two starts and is an outsider.

Ralston Road (66/1)
Louis – “I just don’t get it” – 66/1 outsider of the field and no better than seventh on last three starts.
Simon – “My advice would be that if you want to pursue a career in the racing business, don’t” – Out of his depth here.

Secret Number (16/1)
Louis – “You deserve to be on this stage” – Four consistent runs in Group company gives him each-way credentials.
Simon – “That was distinctly average” – The jockey performance of Silvestre De Sousa after running into countless traffic problems in the Gordon Stakes.

Talent (12/1)
Louis – “You’ve got it going on girl” – Bidding to be first filly to win the St Leger since 1992.
Simon – “You are a saucy little thing aren’t you?” – Common catchphrase to younger contestants or females.
