Wawrinka ready to go the distance against favourite Djokovic

Stanislas Wawrinka has been in arguably the form of his career at Flushing Meadows thus far and though his record against Novak Djokovic leaves a lot to be desired he could give the No.1 seed a run for his money.

The Swiss star is currently priced at 7/2 to reach the US Open final after losing 14 of his previous 16 meetings with Djokovic.

But after an imperious 3-0 win over current US Open and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the last round, Wawrinka will be brimming with confidence ahead of this match-up against a player the Scot previously vanquished at SW19.

Djokovic remains the heavy favourite to progress at odds of 1/5 but, as his 3-1 victory over a tired Mikhail Youzhny suggested, the 26-year-old is not completely invincible.

After all, his Russian opponent had just come through a gruelling five-set epic against Leyton Hewitt in the previous round and yet still managed to take a set from the Australian Open champion.

While Wawrinka’s chances of claiming a surprise win remain slim, with the 28-year-old last beating Djokovic way back in 2006, he could repeat the success of Youzhny and claim a set with odds of 9/4 available on a 3-1 victory for the Serb.

Then again, the current World No.10 could go one better, with odds of 6/1 offered on a 3-2 victory for Djokovic.

These two last met at this year’s Australian Open, with Wawrinka providing a stern test of the 26-year-old’s title credentials that resulted in the Wimbledon finalist narrowly escaping with a 3-2 victory.

On that occasion the final set of the match ended in an epic 12-10 score in the Serb’s favour and with odds of 5/6 available on this match featuring over 37.5 games, backing another epic could leave you quids in.
