Watford head queue to steal Chelsea young gun on loan

One man who might not have enjoyed the influx of exciting foreign stars into the Premier League this summer is Roy Hodgson, some of whose England charges could drop down the pecking orders at their clubs.

The amount of Premier League money spent abroad this summer was £445m, compared to £90m spent domestically. At just 16.8 per cent, this was the lowest percentage ever.

Another disappointment for the national set-up was that several of the most promising young players were unable to find a side in the Premier League willing to take them on loan.

Tom Carroll moved to QPR, Nick Powell went to Wigan and Chelsea pair Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah were unable to find a club at all.

Both Chalobah and McEachran will likely be farmed out to a Championship side before the end of the international break, with the former perhaps set to move back to Watford.

Chalobah made 42 appearances for the Hornets last season, helping them into a play-off final they eventually lost to Crystal Palace.

Palace were reportedly keen to take the 18-year-old on loan this year, but a deal failed to materialise in a hectic deadline day at Selhurst Park.

The midfielder recently signed a five-year contract at Chelsea on the strength of his impressive displays with Watford, but will Gianfranco Zola be able to find a place for Chalobah again this year?

Watford have made a steady start to the new season, sitting seventh with eight points from five matches, and new signings Iriney and Lewis McGugan have both impressed in their midfield.

The Hornets are 11/2 to win the Championship this season.

After Chalobah’s impressive displays last year, Zola would likely still be keen to take the youngster on loan again, but he might not find it as easy to break into the Watford side this time around.
