Unexposed Pacific Rim could be the pick of the fillies

Published:

While many will often dismiss the credentials of French raiders in the St. Leger, the solid each-way credentials of Pacific Rim at 14/1 should not be overlooked.

Uncampaigned as a two-year-old, Mikel Delzangles filly has been extremely impressive in her first season. After just missing out on her first start, she has gone on to land three consecutive races, including the Group 2 Prix De Malleret at Saint-cloud last time out.

And there is no better evidence of the highly progressive nature of this horse than that victory. Umberto Rispoli tracked the leader before shaking up his charge to challenge two furlongs out, and stayed on extremely strongly to win by a comfortable margin in the end.

That win was in company of the highest order and Delzangles’ saddle had Oaks third The Lark and Group 3 winner Ferevia behind to land the lucrative fillies’ contest.

And the assertive fashion in which she won over 1m4f suggests that she will only enjoy a further two.

Many may also naturally be tempted to back a filly simply for the fact a 3lb allowance could well be pivotal in a staying race such as this, but the trends also suggest this could be the way to go.

Fillies have a good record of making the places in this race – each-way backers of the girls would have most certainly seen a tidy profit over the years. In the last 30 renewals, 21 fillies have run with 57.1 per cent of them hitting the frame, including three winners.

While a win on only her fifth is asking a lot of Delzangles’ hot prospect, she is thoroughly unexposed and value seekers looking for a solid each-way shout should look no further.
