Talent looking like the forgotten horse of St Leger brigade
Published:It is not often that a Classic winner can be backed at 14/1 to triumph in another big race in the same season, but that is the situation that exists with Talent, who looks an attractive price to get back on the winning bandwagon in the St Leger.
Talent was a clear winner of the Epsom Oaks in June, but flopped in her only racecourse appearance since, when last of seven in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh.
The lack of significant early pace was not considered to have helped her case that day and a step up in trip from 1m4f to 1m6f for the St Leger only realistically means they will go slower still in the opening stages.
Trainer Ralph Beckett will obviously need to work with his filly at home to help in this regard, while it will be interesting if Richard Hughes is booked to ride, after being on board in the Epsom Oaks.
His chances are boosted by the fact that Richard Hannon is without an entry into the St Leger.
The other thing worth noting is that Talent’s 20/1 success in the Epsom Oaks is not the first time that Beckett has been responsible for a big-priced winner of the Classic, having watched Look Here triumph at 33/1 in 2008.
She then went on to finish third in the St Leger, which is another possible reason to consider Talent as an each-way option.
Only nine fillies have run in the St Leger in the last decade and although none have emerged victorious, three have placed and two of this duo were previous Group 1 winners.
