Susanna Reid to grab the headlines on Strictly Come Dancing

Published:

The headlines at the top of the hour are in and the big news is that while Natalie Gumede and Rachel Riley head into Strictly Come Dancing as favourites, BBC Breakfast’s very own Susanna Reid could be about to spring a surprise.

At present, the 42-year-old is priced at 7/1 to take the top prize on the flagship show, and given the pedigree she brings to the competition it’s a bet worth taking up.

Back in 2011, Reid appeared in a special Children In Need edition of Strictly, where she impressed both the judges and public alike to claim victory against three of her fellow newsreaders.

Since then, regular morning appearances on the BBC One breakfast show has seen her stock rise even further, and the Croydon-born star shouldn’t be overlooked against her better-priced rivals.

Natalie Gumede, for instance, enters the competition as the 4/1 favourite to claim the crown, with the Coronation Street star highly-fancied after it was revealed that she previously attended stage school.

But despite these suggestions, the 29-year-old has been keen to play down the idea that she was a professional dancer, noting in a recent interview that she has never done any ballroom dancing.

Countdown’s very own Rachel Riley, meanwhile, heads into the event at odds of 5/1 to win, though there’s every reason to cast doubt on her own claims for victory.

The 27-year-old may be a popular afternoon television fixture but the word coming out of rehearsals for tonight’s live series opener is that she may not be as elegant on her feet as we were once led to believe.

More concerning still for Riley fans, the Maths whizz recently admitted that she had never previously danced before, suggesting that while her popularity cannot be called into question, she is unlikely to be getting full marks any time soon.

With Reid possessing the perfect blend of public appreciation alongside dance skills and experience, this one-time Breakfast television presenter could be about to provide a serious wake-up call to her Strictly rivals.
