Shay Given to Liverpool could be part of Aston Villa clear-out

Published:

Aston Villa did most of their buying in the early days of the transfer window, so their deadline day emphasis is focused on moving on some old faces, with veteran goalkeeper Shay Given heading the list.

With reports emerging in recent days of a shock move from Liverpool to buy Aston Villa cast-out Given as a new number two keeper, Ladbrokes offer 6/5 that the Irishman heads to Anfield on transfer deadline day, while a switch to QPR for the 37-year-old can be backed at 5/1.

Given made just nine appearances for Villa last season and has apparently been told he is surplus to requirements at Villa Park by manager Paul Lambert.

If the greatly experienced keeper did move to Anfield, it would be part of a frenetic deadline day for the Premier League leaders, who have already confirmed the signings of defensive pairing Mamadou Sakho from Paris St-Germain and Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago llori.

Chelsea winger Victor Moses has also arrived on a season-long loan to make it three deadline day moves already for Liverpool.

This lends considerable weight to Liverpool’s 6/1 price that the Merseysiders will make the most signings of any Premier League club on transfer deadline day.

Meanwhile, Given’s departure could actually be one of several faces to vacate Villa Park before the 11pm cut-off point.

Other players who could potentially be up for auction are Stephen Ireland who has grabbed Middlesbrough’s attentions, Barry Bannan – a target for Crystal place – and possibly Mark Albrighton after the winger’s slide down the pecking order at the Midlands club.
