Poyet’s price suggests he’s poised to take Sunderland reigns
Published:Amid rumours that Gus Poyet has cancelled some of his latest media duties, the money has come in for the former Brighton boss to be unveiled as the new manager of Sunderland.
Reports are suggesting that a late night board meeting at the Stadium of Light pushed Poyet right to the top of the pecking order to be offered the vacant position, with a possible interview due to take place.
Some parts of the media have even suggested that the job is as good as Poyet’s if the part-time TV pundit wants it, which has understandably seen his price shrink rapidly to odds on at 10/11.
This news comes to light just hours after Poyet’s former Chelsea teammate and current Watford boss Gianfranco Zola – who remains a 12/1 shot with Ladbrokes – publically admitted flattery at being linked to the job.
Meanwhile, talk of yet another of Poyet and Zola’s former Stamford Bridge alumni has since cooled, with Roberto Di Matteo’s price to take over the Black Cats sliding dramatically to 8/1 from 10/11 after the Italian was made the early favourite in the running.
Others still featuring high in the betting are former Stoke boss Tony Pulis at 6/1 and ex-England and FC Twente manager Steve McClaren – also available to back at 6/1.
If Poyet is to be appointed then this would make for another slightly eye-brow raising choice given the fact they have just sacked Paolo Di Canio because of his man-management skills.
After all, Poyet’s successful spell in charge of Brighton ended abruptly and under a cloud at the Amex Stadium with the Uruguayan appearing to fall out with the hierarchy at the club.
Nevertheless, Poyet is a young coach with a good reputation as a tactician which enabled him to take the Seagulls to within a game of the Championship play-off final last season.
Brighton were renowned for playing attractive football under him and this could weigh in his favour also.
