NFL or UFC – Mitrionie has the edge over Schaub
Shortly after the new NFL season gets underway, two of its former players will clash in the octagon at UFC 165 in Toronto, Canada.
Matt ‘Meathead’ Mitrionie (6-2) and Brendan ‘The Hybrid’ Schaub (9-3) will finally square off on September 22nd after their original bout was postponed due to an untimely injury for the former.
While both of these fighters can boast all-round athleticism, having played American football in the past, it is Mitrionie who holds the more successful career in that discipline.
Neither man can claim to have been a household name in the NFL but Meathead has the bragging rights after featuring for both the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings.
Schaub, by comparison, never quite made it to the big time, plying his trade in the AFL for the Utah Blaze before being included in the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.
In the UFC both men have lost two of their last three fights but it is Mitrionie who enters the octagon as the slight favourite.
Meathead, 35, claimed five of his six wins by way of knockout and with all three of Schaub’s losses coming by KO, the older man will look to let his striking do the talking.
Mitrionie, who relies on his kickboxing prowess, can be backed at 20/21 to claim the victory, while Schaub’s odds of 4/5 show him as a narrow outsider.
The Hybrid fuses boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu in his fighting style so it comes as no surprise that he too boasts a high knockout percentage.
The 30-year-old has seen seven of his nine victims fail to rise from the canvas, which should ensure an explosive fight in this all-American bout.
However, it is the weaker chin of the younger man that should ultimately be the difference in this fight, making Mitrionie the one to back in this ultimate battle for bragging rights.
