Four captains possible in Spurs back five for Cardiff visit

Published:

Manchester City have already come unstuck when travelling to Cardiff this season, while the best unbeaten Everton could do was secure a goalless draw.

This suggests that 10/11 may be a bit short on a Tottenham victory at the Cardiff City Stadium, especially so soon after a Europa League triumph over Tromso which has left Andre Villas-Boas with three new additions to the club’s injury list.

Thankfully for AVB, none appear to be that serious, although it is pretty much a given that Danny Rose, Younes Kaboul and Mousa Dembele will all not start in Wales.

Better news is that the work permit of summer signing Vlad Chiriches does seem to have finally been completed, which means that he is available for selection.

He has been training with the club for a few weeks and the concerns over Rose and Kaboul could result in him gaining an immediate start at Cardiff.

If this did happen, Tottenham would certainly not be short in the leadership department for the trip and this will be vital if they are to head back to north London with the three points.

There is every possibility that Hugo Lloris will start in goal, with Kyle Walker starting at right-back, Jan Vertonghen moving across to play left-back and Chiriches partnering Michael Dawson at the heart of the defence.

From this quintet, four captains can be found, with Lloris leading the French national side, Vertonghen the Belgium team and formerly Ajax before joining Tottenham, Dawson is the Spurs skipper and Chiriches is Romania’s armband wearer.

Alternatively, Kyle Naughton could play as a right-footed left-back, which would allow Vertonghen to remain in the centre alongside Dawson and mean that Chiriches’ Spurs career would begin with a place on the bench.

Spurs have only conceded once in the whole campaign so far in all competitions and this defensive solidarity may be vital to a positive result being achieved at last season’s Championship winners.

It is 8/5 that Tottenham keep a clean sheet against Cardiff and 23/10 that they win without conceding.
