Federer to prolong Robredo’s sorry losing run in New York
Published:Talk of the demise of Roger Federer might be premature judging by the 17-time Grand Slam winner’s three successive straight sets victories at this year’s US Open.
The Swiss maestro might never rediscover the type of form that marks him out as the greatest of all time in the eyes of most observers, but the identity of his fourth round opponent at Flushing Meadows will ensure that he’ll be confident of another success, with a win in the shortest possible time forming part of our US Open treble.
Spain’s Tommy Robredo has only managed to win three sets in his 10 meetings with the former world No. 1, with Federer boasting a 10-0 record against him. As mentioned above, the Swiss has won all three of his matches in New York in straight sets, and with Robredo having never got past this round of the US Open in 12 attempts another comfortable win looks in store.
Tournament favourite Rafael Nadal needed just 26, 15 and 28 games respectively to see off Ryan Harrison, Rogerio Silva Dutra and Ivan Dodig in New York thus far, and although Philipp Kohlschreiber will present a tougher task the Spanish ace could be similarly ruthless. Nadal holds a 10-1 career record against the German, who dropped a set in both of his previous rounds in New York.
Last year’s semi-finalist David Ferrer lost a set in overcoming both his second and third round opponents, and against Janko Tipsarevic things will undoubtedly be tougher. The Spaniard overcame the Serb in five at the quarter-final stage in New York last year, and whilst the 10/11 on offer for over 38.5 games should be considered, backing a gruelling Ferrer win boosts our treble significantly.
