England U21s won’t have it all their own way against young Moldovans

Published:

Gareth Southgate takes charge of his first England U21 match and his new-look side shouldn’t have too many issues facing their Moldovan counterparts.

In their first match together, and under the stewardship of Roy Hodgson, the young charges produced an impressive performance as they hammered six goals past their rivals Scotland.

The Young Lions are 1/20 to register a victory here and such a short price is unlikely to draw much attention against a team who have just two away successes in their previous seven fixtures.

However, backing a glut of goals from the home side may prove a little hasty. The visitors have conceded two goals or more in two of their preceding six games, with only one of those resulting in defeat.

Bearing this in mind getting behind there being 2-3 goals at 7/5 looks wise, while those expecting a particularly frugal showing from Moldova can get 0-1 strikes to be registered at a healthy 6/1.

England’s opponents are also available at a handicap of +3.0 and considering their fairly strong showing at the back in recent times, the 6/5 about this outcome looks generous.

An away triumph seems particularly unlikely at 20/1 but Alexandru Curtianu’s men have lost just one of their last three and have registered victories against Poland, Albania and San Marino in their previous qualifying campaign.

A stalemate may appeal at 11/1 and could be the best the away side can hope for.

In the Scotland tie there were six different scorers for England, an encouraging sign for the new boss, but it is likely that Connor Wickham will lead the line and the Sunderland man is 11/4 to be the first name on the scoresheet against Moldova.

Saido Berahino will be looking for his debut cap and the West Brom striker is fresh from a hat-trick in the Capital One Cup, making him an enticing price at 4/1 to open the scoring.
