Departures may mean Aston Villa get two deadline-day recruits

Published:

Aston Villa’s spending power is almost guaranteed to increase if they are able to ship out the remainder of their ‘Bomb Squad’ and the early omens look good.

With Darren Bent having already joined Fulham on loan, similar fates could be in the pipeline for Shay Given and Stephen Ireland – to Liverpool and Stoke respectively.

Throw in that Barry Bannan is on the cusp of joining Crystal Palace permanently, Villa have freed up a decent sum of money in wages for these unwanted players.

Having conducted a large amount of transfer business early in the summer, it was largely expected that only an attacking midfielder was required.

However, a deal in the region of £5m has reportedly been agreed with Lazio for striker Libor Kozak, who will provide some added competition for Christian Benteke in attack.

Kozak top scored with eight goals in last season’s Europa League and the latest speculation is that he is at Villa’s training ground ahead of signing.

In terms of Villa’s search for an attacking midfielder with some creativity, Tom Ince has been previously linked from Blackpool and this rumour has not been totally quashed as yet.

Villa are currently 13/10 to finish in the top half of the Premier League this season.
