Cardiff swoop as Odemwingie finally gets deadline day move
Published:For all the dramatic deadline-day deals there have been in the past, perhaps the most unexpected sight the Premier League has seen was Peter Odemwingie waiting forlornly outside QPR for a transfer that never happened.
That was at the end of the winter window last season, and it is fair to say the striker never really rehabilitated his reputation at West Brom.
Odemwingie did play seven more times for the Baggies, but did not score again and both parties are keen to part ways this summer.
A £4m valuation blocked several moves and it seems that West Brom have had to reduce their asking price for Odemwingie, with Cardiff City reportedly close to signing him for £2.5m.
That is still a good price for a 32-year-old surplus to requirements at the club, even without considering his antics in January and especially considering he is in the final year of his contract.
It could end up being a good deal for all parties, as for all his faults, Odemwingie is an experienced Premier League player with a decent goal-scoring record.
Able to play anywhere across the attack, Odemwingie scored 30 goals in 87 appearances for West Brom, with 15 in his debut season.
Cardiff have enjoyed a good start to the season, beating Manchester City and drawing with Everton, but they are still priced at 7/4 to go down.
The Bluebirds have drawn a blank in two of their three Premier League matches, and adding Odemwingie to the squad will give Malky Mackay plenty of options going forward.
Cardiff have already signed seven players this summer, with Gary Medel, Steven Caulker and Andreas Cornelius the most high profile additions.
