Burnley set to end 34-year wait for local bragging rights

Flares were still in fashion the last time a Burnley side got one over their fierce rivals Blackburn, but the time to set the record straight in this East Lancashire derby is nigh.

Hold on to your hotpots folks, this is going to be a full-blooded Lancastrian affair, though there will be plenty of quality on show in this Saturday lunchtime derby live on Sky Sports.

Both editions of this local needle match produced a 1-1 draw last season, but Burnley’s flying start to the season shows they are ready to finally end their long overdue (34 years and 10 games) wait for a victory – rated at 11/10 by Ladbrokes.

Despite being so close in a geographical sense, long stretches of plying their trades in separate divisions have largely kept them apart until this Championship reuniting of the past three seasons.

Three wins from their opening five games of this campaign have propelled Burnley into third in the infant Championship table ahead of this clash at Turf Moor and Blackburn blood is next on the menu.

Rovers may have steadied the ship with successive home wins, though both victories came against teams in the bottom five and both witnessed goals conceded – a trait they’ve not shaken in six games in all competitions thus far.

Meanwhile, aside from an off day at Brighton, Burnley’s last three league wins have seen them score at least twice in each and only concede once.

If you’re looking for a first goal scorer, or indeed an any time option, look no further than 21-year-old Burnley striker Danny Ings at odds of 5/1 and 6/4 respectively.

The lad is the talk of the town in Burnley, having notched five goals from seven appearances, including the first goal on three occasions.

And striking partner in crime Sam Vokes – with three league goals already – is a 7/1 and 9/4 shot to find the net also.

It’s also worth noting both teams have found the net in four of the last five encounters, at 8/11, while Jordan Rhodes, with four in his last two, is certainly worth a stab at evens to find the back of the Burnley net for the visitors.
