Bayern and PSG best group winner Champions League double

Published:

There are odds-on favourites in six of the eight Champions League groups to progress to the knockout stages as group winners and of these, the two prices that most stand out are those of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United have not been particularly reliable in the Champions League in recent seasons and manager David Moyes is far from a senior when it comes to European competition.

Barcelona and Chelsea are understandably very short prices to be group winners at 1/5 and 2/9 respectively, while Real Madrid have Juventus to cope with.

This leaves Barcelona and PSG and the two could combine to create a lucrative double at around 1/1 to top their own groups.

Individually, the pair are both priced at 4/9, with Bayern having Man City, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen for company in Group D, while PSG face Benfica, Olympiakos and Anderlecht in Group C.

Not only are Bayern the defending champions of the competition, but they have not had too much difficulty accruing group-stage points in recent seasons, gathering at least 13 from a possible 18 in each of the last three seasons.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola was a group winner in all of his four seasons with Barcelona.

As for PSG, they won a similarly nothing group last season and are starting to run into some domestic form too, as manager Laurent Blanc is beginning to get his methods across to the players.

Benfica are likely to be their biggest rivals, but have finished third in their group in two of the last three seasons and although they progressed as group winners on the other, the fact they drew two of their three home games is a concern.

Olympiakos have also failed to get out of their group in either of the last two years, while Anderlecht were bottom of an even weaker group 12 months ago.
