Wolves’ newfound steel bodes well for 4/5 Championship return

After a tough few years and successive relegations, Wolves fans can finally see some light as their side sit third in League One with three wins from their opening four games.

After Terry O’Connor, Stale Solbakken and Dean Saunders all came and fell by the wayside following Wolves’ misguided decision to get rid of Mick McCarthy while still a Premier League side, the Molineux club found themselves in League One just two years later.

Kenny Jackett is the man they turned to add some much needed grit, steel and stability, and if their opening games in League One are anything to go by, then they’ve finally stumbled upon a winning formula.

After an opening day 0-0 draw at Preston, Wolves have recorded three league wins in a row, scoring eight goals in the process.

Their 4-0 demolishing of Gillingham was the most impressive result of the set, but Wolves fans can arguably find just as much promise in their hard-fought 2-1 successes following.

Matt Doherty struck a late winner with five minutes to go at Bristol City, while Billy Clarke’s 90th minute equaliser for Crawley on Saturday was not enough to deter the men in gold, as they went up the other end and won a penalty, duly converted by Leigh Griffiths.

As is his approach, Jackett remains cautious about the club’s chances of immediately bouncing back, but will be encouraged by the spread of goals throughout the side, with five different goalscorers registering this season already.

Another reason to feel positive is the fact that their squad remains chock-full of players with experience of playing at a higher level, with the likes of Kevin Doyle, Sam Ricketts and George Elokobi all having played at the highest level of English football.

Jackett’s men are 4/5 favourites to secure promotion back to the Championship, but while they’ve made an impressive start, they’ll face stiff competition from Leyton Orient (4/1) and Peterborough (6/5), both of whom have won all four of their games so far, and scoring more goals in the process.
