Three league losses has Millwall fans fearing the call of League One
Published:Forecasting for the entire season on the basis of three results is likely to be as accurate as a Michael Fish prediction for scorchers all August.
However, if you had to pick a Championship relegation candidate off the back of their late-summer showings, you wouldn’t be knocking Millwall’s 7/4 to finish the current campaign in the bottom three.
The Lions have started life under Steve Lomas much more akin to a far feebler form of feline, finding themselves at the bottom of the pile and winless after three.
On top of this, they’ve failed to score a solitary goal despite drafting in experienced second tier pros Steve Morison and Scott McDonald to replace the goals that they lost when Chris Wood was whisked away to Leicester halfway through last season.
Perhaps the biggest cause for concern though, is that two projected relegation rivals have also taken maximum points from the south London club already, with Yeovil and Huddersfield both recording 1-0 wins at the Den.
Their notoriously tempestuous support weren’t overly enamoured with the appointment of Lomas from the get-go on account of his West Ham links and, after just four competitive matches at the helm, the waves of animosity are beginning to immerse the Ulsterman.
Defeat against Sheffield Wednesday, another relegation likely lad, at Hillsborough in their forthcoming clash will see both this pressure amped up once more, as well as a couple of digits shaved off their tumbling price for the Championship axe to fall on their necks this term.
The last time the club was demoted to League One following the 2005/06 campaign they kicked off in similarly dismal fashion. They picked up one point from their opening three, scoring just once in that period.
Worryingly for Lions fans is that they went on to lose the following four league games and ended up finishing 10 points adrift in the drop zone after 46 games.
If Lomas hopes to hang on to his job a little longer, he’ll need to ensure his side put three points on the so-called ‘board’ when they next take to the field, as relegation worries begin to mount at the Den.
