Ted Veale an each-way Ebor shout for trainer Tony Martin

Trainer Tony Martin may have only just stopped celebrating the Galway feats of Busted Tycoon, but now he must turn his attention to the Ebor meeting at York.

Martin oversaw the remarkable feat of his four-year-old filly just over a fortnight ago, when she became the first horse to win three times at the same Galway festival, with the successes all occurring within five days of each other.

Those wins over two miles show the good form of Martin’s yard heading to York, where the trainer himself says that he’s got high hopes for the six-year-old Ted Veale, who ran well in coming eighth in the Galway Hurdle earlier this month.

“Ted Veale ran a very good race in the Galway Hurdle on ground he wouldn’t like,” he said after Busted Tycoon’s wins.

“He has an Ebor entry and is almost certain to get better ground there, in which case he’s one with a live chance.”

Although largely considered a hurdler, Ted Veale has won on two of his last three starts on the flat.

Those wins at Cheltenham and Bellewstown stand the gelding in good stead ahead of the meeting at York, where the 16/1 shot has to be considered as a terrific each-way shout in the Ebor.

A huge 95 horses still hold entries for the 170th running of the 1m 6f flat contest for thoroughbreds, with Sir Michael Stoute’s 8/1 Opinion still out on his own at the head of the betting following his impressive win in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Ascot in June.

The colt has been aimed at the Ebor ever since then, but the son of Oasis Dream ended up in a disappointing fifth at Haydock last month.
