Spurs bid for another midfielder as Bale to Man Utd gathers pace

It was widely assumed previously that if Christian Eriksen was to leave Ajax then it would be for Borussia Dortmund, with the German club’s penchant for attacking football and potential for trophies among their appealing qualities.

However, Dortmund instead opted to boost their attacking ranks with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with a move for Eriksen now seeming unlikely.

Given that he is in the final year of his Ajax contract and doesn’t seem keen on extended this deal, the Dutch champions may be forced into selling in the transfer window and Tottenham are interested.

Rumours are that a £7m offer has already been tabled and rejected, with Ajax holding out for nearer £12m.

This sum shouldn’t be a problem for Tottenham once Gareth Bale’s expected departure is confirmed, with Manchester United backed notably in from 11/2 to 5/2 to be the Welshman’s club at the end of the transfer window.

However, it remains Real Madrid at 1/8 where he is deemed most likely to end up.

A £12m figure should also interest Arsenal and is arguably a better investment than the £20m they are speculated to be considering paying Newcastle for Yohan Cabaye.

The big problem for Tottenham is that Eriksen is not a direct replacement for Bale because he tends to better suited to the role that is currently occupied by Mousa Dembele or Paulinho, except with slightly more creativity.

He is certainly not a wide forward and his shuttling abilities could be wasted if starting too high up the pitch.

Meanwhile, although Spurs are getting there, debatably at present they do not fulfil Eriksen’s want of being able to compete prominently for trophies.

Tottenham remain 18/1 to win the Premier League and a perfect start of two wins from two has only helped their cause. But it is the 13/10 that they qualify for next season’s Champions League by finishing in the top four that has the greater appeal.
