Solid Galileo Rock will be tough to beat in Ladbrokes St. Leger

Classic success has so far eluded Galileo Rock, but that can all change at next month’s Ladbrokes St. Leger.

Having come third in the Investec Derby and then second in the Irish version in June, the David Wachman-trained colt is the 5/1 second favourite for glory at Doncaster.

Although without a win since his debut success at Leopardstown exactly one year ago, the three-year-old has been in the frame amongst exalted company on enough occasions to warrant serious consideration on September 14th.

Aidan O’Brien’s 4/1 Queen’s Vase winner Leading Light is still shining down on the rest from the head of the market, but speaking last month Wachman was confident of his charge’s chances.

“Galileo Rock’s pedigree suggests that he is going to get better with age and we are hopeful that he can keep improving,” said the trainer.

“The St Leger is still a long way away and there is no rush to decide where he runs next – we will make up a plan as we go along.”

The staying power shown by the son of 2001 star and notable sire Galileo in those aforementioned places at Epsom Downs and the Curragh certainly stand him in good stead, and Wachman and connections have every right to feel confident.

But Ballydoyle handler O’Brien will have a thing or two to say about that of course, especially given his disappointment with Camelot last year.

Chasing the Triple Crown, the colt was narrowly beaten into second by the Godolphin horse Encke in the St. Leger.

This time around the Irish champion trainer holds 12 of the current 43 entries, with high hopes for Leading Light as well as 16/1 Eye Of The Storm, who lost by a head in the Sandown Classic Trial in April.
