Price decided on Mata leaving Chelsea for Tottenham

Jose Mourinho stated after Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford that there was “no chance” that Juan Mata would be leaving in the summer transfer window.

Those taking Mourinho’s words as gospel may feel there is profit to be had from the 1/4 that Mata remains at Stamford Bridge once the window closes, but this has not prevented interest from elsewhere.

Tottenham are thought to be the keenest and they are priced up at 6/1 to have signed Mata before the end of the transfer window.

Speculation insists that Spurs have made an approach and Mata would certainly fill their desire for an attacking midfielder, having seemingly already lost out on Brazilian Willian thanks to Chelsea’s late bid.

Given that Mata was one of only four Premier League players to reach double figures for both goals and assists last season, it is fairly apparent what he would bring to Spurs, while his assist tally was better than that of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon combined.

However, even though Mata has only featured in one of Chelsea’s opening three Premier League games, Mourinho has always said that the Spaniard is an important part of his plans.

Mata reportedly missed the opener with Hull because injury had limited his training and then it was a tactical decision to leave him on the bench at Old Trafford, as Kevin De Bruyne was believed to be better suited to nullifying the impact of Man Utd captain Patrice Evra.

It seems Man Utd themselves are in the market for another attacking midfielder and should they lose out to Real Madrid in the battle to sign Bale, as the betting suggests they will, Mata is a possible alternative.

Mata joining Man Utd in this transfer window is priced at 9/2, while it is 8/1 that he joins Atletico Madrid, who are thought to be interested in a loan deal.
