Player to watch this season: Jose Campana at Crystal Palace

In the summer exodus from Sevilla to the Premier League, one player has been somewhat overlooked.

Headlines may have been created by Manchester City’s outlay of approximately £35m to bring in both Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo from southern Spain, whilst Liverpool have high hopes for the midfielder Luis Alberto, who joins the Reds from Sevilla via a loan spell with Barcelona’s B team.

Coming in somewhat under the radar though is Jose Campana’s switch to Crystal Palace, who are priced at 11/8 to avoid relegation this season.

The Eagles may have landed somewhat of a coup with Campana, a deep-lying midfielder who was part of the Spain squads which won the European under-19s Championship in both 2011 and 2012.

This summer the 20-year-old captained his country at the under-20 World Cup in Turkey, and he moves to the Premier League having created a favourable reputation in his homeland, where his style has been likened to that of Barcelona’s European Championship and World Cup winner Sergio Busquets.

Given his elevating status, Campana’s £1.75m move to the newly-promoted Palace has been seen as somewhat of a surprise in Spain, where they feel that the midfielder will use the Selhurst Park stage as a stepping stone before joining one of the big boys.

Ian Holloway won’t be thinking like that though, and will instead view the youngster as an essential cog in his team – who are 7/2 to beat a potentially Gareth Bale-less Tottenham Hotspur at home in their season opener.

Campana joins Dwight Gayle, Jerome Thomas, Stephen Dobbie, Kevin Phillips and Elliot Grandin in moving to south east London this summer, creating a potentially impressive cocktail of talented youngsters and players familiar to Holloway.

At 8/15 Palace are still the odds-on favourites to go down, but if Campana can exert his growing authority on the team then such a short price may quickly become a thing of the past.
