Newcastle interest makes Demba Ba each-way tip for top scorer

The Premier League top scorer race is likely to be another straight shoot-out between Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez this year– provided the latter remains in England.

However, with news emerging of Newcastle United’s interest in bringing Demba Ba back to St James’ Park , the Senegal striker should tempt as an each-way pick at odds of 66/1.

Ladbrokes are paying a quarter of the odds on the top four in the race to bag the most goals and with Ba seemingly not on Jose Mourinho’s radar he could wind up being Alan Pardew’s first choice forward before the transfer window closes.

Despite missing his fair share of games through injury, Ba managed to notch 15 goals last season and 16 in the year prior to that.

These tallies would have secured the Chelsea man a top four finish in the scoring charts on four occasions since the turn of the century and with a point to prove should he be sent packing by the Blues it’s hard to imagine Ba not netting 16+ again this term.

Each-way backers might expect their man to need 20 or more strikes in a domestic campaign to see a return but it is worth noting that such a tally has only been required four times in the last 13 seasons in order to secure a top four goalscoring berth.

However, after playing just 65 minutes of Chelsea’s first three games – and being omitted altogether from the squad that faced Manchester United – Ba is already playing catch-up to those starting the season in fine form.

New Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado has netted two goals in as many games and although both came from the penalty spot the Spaniard is already looking at home in a Spurs shirt and tempts at 10/1.

Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge is another forward who has hit the ground running this year.  Responsible for the two goals that have given The Reds their best start to a league campaign in five years, Sturridge also grabbed a League Cup brace in midweek to send a warning out to his rivals.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City man is priced at 14/1 to top score this year and while that might be just too much of an ask, his start means he certainly warrants an each-way shout at least.
